Sandeep Gupta is a highly accomplished railway engineer and administrator with over 34 years of distinguished service in the Indian Railways. As a 1989-batch officer of the Indian Railway Service of Engineers (IRSE), Mr Gupta has specialised in railway infrastructure development, with deep expertise in tunnel and bridge engineering, track construction, and project leadership across the challenging Himalayan terrain. 

He has led several prestigious national infrastructure projects—including the Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), Jammu–Udhampur Rail Link (JURL), and the commissioning of iconic structures such as the world’s highest railway arch bridge (Chenab), India’s first cable-stayed bridge (Anji Khad), and the country’s longest transportation tunnel (Tunnel T-50, 12.77 km). His work has set industry benchmarks and positioned Indian Railway engineering on the global stage. 

Mr Gupta holds an M.Tech in Structural Engineering from NIT Allahabad and a B.Tech in Civil Engineering from NIT Kurukshetra. His international exposure spans collaborative visits and professional programs in Italy, Denmark, France, Switzerland, Singapore, and Malaysia. He has championed the adoption of cutting-edge technologies and global best practices in rail infrastructure, executing projects in some of India’s most technically demanding, remote, and security-sensitive regions. 

Under his able leadership, the USBRL project—hailed as India’s most difficult, challenging & complex hill railway project, post-independence—was successfully completed and commissioned on 14th January 2025 and formally dedicated to the Nation by Hon’ble  Prime Minister on 6th June 2025 ,bringing vital connectivity to the Kashmir Valley and integrating it with the rest of India. He has demonstrated exemplary skills in mentoring large interdisciplinary teams, engaging with stakeholders, and managing multi-faceted challenges, earning admiration for his strategic vision and operational acumen.He superannuated in February’25.
