Karlijn uses her mixed background in Design, Science, and Engineering to develop natural materials from unexpected, widely available sources that address urgent environmental challenges like climate change and pollution. From transforming mining waste into batteries to crafting architectural materials from salt, Karlijn bridges disciplines to bring novel technologies to life.
Karlijn met the co-founders of Notpla during her studies in Innovation Design Engineering at
Imperial College London and the Royal College of Art, where the founders met and started Notpla a few years earlier. Notpla is a science and design-driven company that creates truly natural packaging solutions from seaweed and plants that disappear as quickly as a fruit peel. Since winning the prestigious Earthshot prize, their solutions have already replaced over 10 million pieces of single-use plastic. At Notpla, Karlijn works as Innovation Director, strategizing and coordinating Innovation activities with a multidisciplinary team to develop the next generations of Notpla products and materials to replace more plastic packaging.
