Prof Dr Kan Zaw
Dr Kan Zaw holds a PhD in Economics from the Yangon University of Economics and Doctor of Business Administration Honoris Causa from Victoria University, Switzerland. He holds his
Master of Development Studies from Institute of Social Studies (ISS), Erasmus University, The Hague, The Netherlands. He was a Visiting Research Fellow (VRF) at the Institute of Developing Economies, Tokyo in 1996.
He has over 40 years of experience in research, consultancy, and capacity building in economics and regional planning. His consultancies and researches include works in ASEAN and neighboring countries. He has supervised PhDs and Master’s students in research related to Macroeconomics, Regional Planning, Development Studies and Public Administration.
Dr Kan Zaw was the founding Rector of the Monywa University of Economics (1997-2000) and Rector of Yangon University of Economics (2000-2011). He was the pioneer for those Executive Level Master Programmes in Development Studies (MDevS) and Public Administration (MPA) opened at the Yangon University of Economics.
He has participated in many research projects and published in international peer-reviewed journals, conference papers, book chapters, and development reports. One of his remarkable Paper is the one done during his Visiting Research Fellow at the Institute of Developing Economies, Tokyo, Japan, “National Integration and Regional Development in Myanmar“. He has participated in several development, and industrial projects as well as programs funded by organizations including the UNDP, IBRD and others. The Report ” Wheeling and Dealing in Myanmar” which focus on the Socioeconomic Impact of Epidemic in Eastern Shan State Area (1995) was one of the field surveys that he had actively participated.
In 2011 he was appointed as a Deputy Minister for Ministry of National Planning and Economic Development, then, promoted to Union Minister as well as ASEAN Economic Minister from 2012 September – 2016 March.
He was appointed as a Union Auditor General in 2 February 2021 – 19 August 2022.
He is now a Minister for Investment and Foreign Economic Relations and again as an ASEAN Economic Minster.
