Sanjay Gupta is a seasoned mechanical engineer and senior public-sector leader with nearly four decades of experience in railway operations, infrastructure development, and organizational leadership. He most recently served as Chairman & Managing Director of Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL), where he provided strategic leadership for over eight years, overseeing both technical performance and business growth.

Throughout his career, Mr. Gupta has led large, multidisciplinary teams and managed complex, high-value infrastructure projects with a strong focus on operational excellence, financial discipline, and stakeholder collaboration. Under his leadership, KRCL successfully completed 100% route electrification, achieved record freight and passenger traffic, and delivered iconic engineering projects, including major railway bridges and the Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link in challenging terrain.

A strong proponent of financial restructuring and sustainable growth, he guided significant fundraising initiatives, balance-sheet optimization, and turnaround strategies that resulted in substantial increases in turnover and profits. His tenure is also marked by successful international consultancy engagements, including railway development projects in Nepal.

Mr. Gupta began his career with the Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineering (IRSME) and held progressive leadership roles including Chief Mechanical Engineer and Director (Operations & Commercial) at KRCL. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Railway Institute of Mechanical & Electrical Engineers, Jamalpur, and has completed advanced leadership programs at Wharton, INSEAD, IIM Ahmedabad, and the Institute of Directors.
